Your collaboration in this tour is what will protect this amazing creatures for future generations. The Leatherback turtles come to these beaches to lay their eggs during March to May. The turquoise water of Gandoca is truly a paradise on earth! The Gandoca lagoon is part of the wetlands contained in the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge with an extension of 266 hectars, and was declared as an internationally important site by RAMSAR . It stands out for its extremely high purity and because of that is a principal breeding site for the tarpon and the manatee, a highly endangered species. The lagoon also contains the only natural mangrove oyster bank on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Its high diversity in flora and fauna is due to its protected continuity of mangroves and rainforest. This is one of our coast’s treasure off the beaten path and can only be accessed in company with a guide and a silent boat.

About Gandoca

Gandoca is a tiny, remote village of approx. 150 inhabitants situated on the Caribbean coast between Punta Mona and the mouth of the Sixaola river which is the border line between Costa Rica and Panama. The houses are dispersed and the people living here are ladino and mestizo farmers who are mostly descendants of those who started to settle here  in the early 1930’s and 40’s. READ MORE
